Originally the parish church of the town of Newcastle upon Tyne, St Nicholas church became a cathedral in 1882 when the new diocese of Newcastle was created out of the northern part of the diocese of Durham.

These photos were taken during a "Heritage Open Day" when the cathedral tower, normally closed to visitors, opened its doors to the public.
