Situated about fifteen miles west of Newcastle on the north bank of the Tyne.
The name is of Saxon origin and means "homestead of the sons of Offa"
The parish of Ovingham was given to the de Umfraville family after the Norman invasion of 1066.  The same family were instrumental in building Prudhoe Castle just over the river.
