The Bridge was constructed in 1912/13 but is now approaching the end of its useful life. Its load carrying capacity has been reduced over recent years and it has now reached the point where it can only just about support its own weight.
North Tyneside Council have come to the conclusion that the only sensible thing to do is to demolish and replace it.
